RSHC’s Bruce Wagman Featured in Chronicle Investigation Report

Riley Safer Holmes & Cancila LLP attorney Bruce Wagman, a nationally recognized animal law attorney, was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle's Aug. 3, 2026, investigative report, “Deadly Sanctuary: ‘Death Row’ for Dogs,” which examined allegations surrounding Miranda’s Rescue, a Northern California self-described no-kill animal sanctuary where authorities uncovered a mass grave containing the remains of more than 100 dogs.

The Chronicle investigation detailed decades of warning signs and allegations that hundreds of dogs sent to the rescue may never have been rehomed. Authorities have described the discovery as a “horrific scene,” with many of the recovered animals showing evidence of gunshot wounds.

Wagman, whose practice focuses on animal welfare and protection, was among the legal and animal welfare experts cited as the Chronicle explored the potential implications of the case and the broader responsibilities of rescue organizations entrusted with vulnerable animals.

The report is part of the San Francisco Chronicle’s ongoing “Deadly Sanctuary” investigation into Miranda’s Rescue and the unanswered questions surrounding hundreds of missing dogs.
